The Story Behind
Edible Gold Leaf: Beauty under Strict Hygienic Standards
Gold leaf intended for food differs not only in purity, but above all in the standards governing its manufacture, inspection and handling. Edible gold is used as the food colour E175 and must be expressly suitable for use on food.
A lustrous appearance alone is therefore not enough. What matters is where, how and under which conditions the leaf was made. Reputable food production uses dedicated or appropriately controlled production lines. Operating materials, tools, packaging and working procedures must all meet the requirements of food manufacture.
Even seemingly technical details are important. Wherever machinery, compressors or compressed-air systems are used in the production environment, safeguards must prevent unwanted residues or minute contaminants from coming into contact with the product. In rigorously food-oriented production environments, care is therefore taken to ensure that no unsuitable lubricants are used in such auxiliary systems. Where technically necessary, food-grade oils are employed.
Huber Gold commissions edible gold leaf exclusively in 23K and 24K. Our specifications are deliberately exacting: the quality supplied must at least meet the declared K designation and, in practice, exceed it by a margin of safety. Edible gold is not merely about lustre. It is about trust.
