Persian Blue Salt – A Geological Marvel of Nature
While many salt deposits form immense layers suitable for industrial extraction, Persian Blue Salt appears only in narrow, unpredictable bands. In Iran, merely a small number of mines contain such zones. Reaching them first requires substantial quantities of rock and ordinary rock salt to be removed by hand.
Our partnership with a mine owner gives us access to exceptionally transparent crystal zones distinguished by intense light refraction and rare colouration.
Before these rare areas can be reached at all, ordinary rock and common salt must be laboriously removed by hand and transported out of the mine. The overwhelming majority of the material is ordinary rock salt. From approximately 100 kilograms of extracted material, on average only around one kilogram of commercially available Persian Blue Salt is obtained.
Even this familiar blue salt is already an absolute rarity.
Genuine Persian Blue Salt occurs exclusively in Iran. No comparable deposits are known anywhere else in the world. It is precisely this geological singularity that makes Persian Blue Salt the rarest salt in the world. Annual extraction is therefore limited to only a few tonnes.
With great gratitude and considerable patience, we were able to establish an exclusive partnership with a mine owner, giving us access to an exceptionally rare part of these deposits: highly transparent crystals with intense light refraction and extraordinary colouration.
These particular crystal zones occur only extremely rarely within the already narrow salt bands. On average, a section of only around one metre in length is found within approximately 100 metres of salt band where geological pressure was exceptionally high over millions of years. There, ordinary salt developed into transparent crystalline structures with fascinating optical properties.
At isolated and exceedingly rare points, the pressure generated by tectonic plate movements was so immense that the crystal lattice of the salt was microscopically altered. No pigment was created; instead, a purely physical effect arose as light is refracted and reflected within the crystal.
The result is a breathtaking play of colour.
Depending on the light source, the crystals reveal different nuances – from pale lilac through petrol and sapphire blue to deep royal blue and amethyst violet. Under warm light, they appear intensely violet; in cooler light or sunlight, they tend towards deep blue. Against a bright screen, their colour often changes instantly. Place a crystal in water and the water remains perfectly clear, because the colour is not contained in the material itself, but arises solely through refraction.
The result is a play of colour that reveals itself anew with every change of light.
Properties of the Salt
Its natural richness in minerals is particularly remarkable. Unlike most European salts, Persian Blue Salt naturally contains significant quantities of potassium chloride (sylvite). Whereas ordinary Persian Blue Salt contains an average of approximately 13–17% potassium chloride, our mine is exceptionally rich and reaches a natural concentration of up to 24.8%.
The crystals display an extraordinary variety of structures and appearances: some almost transparent, others marked by fine marbling, angular patterns or intense veins of colour. Some appear delicate and restrained; others dramatic and powerful. No two crystals are alike.
Each is singular – formed deep within the earth over periods of time beyond imagination.
